Yeah, i wonder when we see sort of these supercharged 2 strokes in a truck or car... Extreme power in a small engine, without overstraining the rods..
A two stroke divides the force on the piston over one more stroke than a 4 stroke, allowing the engineer to build an engine with theoretically 100% more power at the same forces on the piston, rods, etcetera.
The 2 stroke engine just has an image problem here. They are linked to old smokey Trabant cars from former East Germany.
Personally, i would design the two stroke engine with an extra breathing valve in the head, which means that the air can flow from head to lowest dead point, instead of LDP to cylinder head to LDP.
The two stroke Diesels dont have any of the minus points of the gasoline, or Otto 2 stroke engine, because the Diesel is injected in fresh air in a closed cylinder compartment, insteaf of a fuel-air mixture what blows through the inlet port, (partially) right into the outlet.

Hey Renze, The technology is not dead, if they could get 5,600 horsepower out of a Deltic (Max in 1956), then with better materials who knows?? (Less than 1kg per hp) www.dair.co.uk

If they are good/reliable enough for air use and applications then this is a pointer. In a ship or land application the most embarassing thing that can happen when the engine stops is that you must roll to a stop. On an aircraft wih three axis of movement things are a little different, so reliability will pe paramount. However will not be surprised to see 200hp from 2 ltr diesel - it is possible now, it is just a case of prodcutionising it.

Hey, but.... At my school (technical engineering) we also have a small aviation division. The complete bunch of students, non-aviators included, made some excursions to airbases. The F-16's of the Dutch army are rebuilt every 100 glying hours or so. Arent aviation engines getting their reliability from frequent service and overhauls?? ....By the way: Ships dont roll to the tank stop....
