An IH 3388 "Ant-eater" have come up for sale here in Norway. It is a very rare tractor in this country! Anyway, I have heard they have troublesome gearboxes? Does anyone know? And what about parts?
A friend of mine claims these came with a V8 engine eventually? As far as i know, this is not correct. Does anyone know?
Thanks guys

As far as i know, they are not bad tractors, as long as you remember that it should be used as a tractor, and not as a bulldozer, even though the massive traction of the 4 big wheels invite you to. an old member of this site, in Sweden, Laapa, has one and said here, that the U-joint connecting the engine with the gearbox, was the tractors weak point.

The torque amplifier gearbox can be known to give problems if abused. My tractor has already had the TA done and is under 2500 hours. If used correctly it should be fine, though the tractors are quite easy to split and correct this if it goes wrong. Parts can still be bought through Case IH dealers and can be shipped from the US.
They came with International's 466 engine which was used in the axial flow combines and rarely gives problems.
As Renze said, you must remember the tractor was designed as a 2WD Row crop tractor and not for heavy work.

i think from memory its safe to expect wear in the pivot point, bushes and pins, lol..........yeap.....the TA.........and i am told some bits for the front axle are a little hard to find, but i think from what someone told me its made up of some axle bits from the rowcrop versions as well
i think from memory you had two types of interior finishing in the cab,

Hi ya used to drive one ,not a bad workhorse ya the pivot point is a tad weak but the same as all pivots tho keep the grease up to the uni's and any joint's .. motor the one i drove had never been touched had been looked after with good service injector pump let go and all the injecters were stuffed new heart and it was back to full power .. built to run on the flat so a bit tippy on hills with out duels also hydro/trans oil pick up can run dry on hills so need to be over filled .. TA yea a bit of a prob most due to changeing under low revs alot get welded in high they pull like a school boy so ya don't realy use it as for saying row crop well if ya put a 7210 or 7220 in the row crop class then yes it is pulling wise it's between them .. 3pl arms are a bit weak and have seen the ends pulled out of the turn buckles make them level and weld the or change them for ones of magums .. i think the 88's come out in a 2+2 set up but in the standard set up i think the 88's got the axe with the take over of inter with case it did have some up dates over the 86 models .. front axle i think is the same parts as the rear diffrent houseing tho ..some of the USA guys will know more or woody will beable to link ya up with one of them catch ya JDK

The 466 is a legendary motor. I have a 5288 with a DT-466, fantastic motor. About the 2+2s they are great horses, unbeatable traction. The first 30 series 2+2s had the same basic transmission, TA, and final drives as in the 86s. The second 60 series 2+2s were updated some, but they're also harder to find. The final series, the "Super 70s" had the same gearbox and final drive system as the 50 series row-crops.
Please, if you buy a 70 series, build a shrine and park in it there! These tractors are far too rare and dear to be used at all. They are the last icons for a truly great company, now tainted by NH. It was bad enough when the stuck Case in front, after it became CNH, it's all down hill from there.

Most of the older IH tractors in the US are serviced in the aftermarket. After market T/A's are built better and stronger, and some carry a 5 year warranty. Transmission gears, bullgear pinions, hydraulic pumps, hitch parts, flywheels, clutches, even some cab sheet metal and cab doors, and A/C parts are available through the aftermarket, where CNH has discontinued them. Most all the people using the older 66-86 series rely on the aftermarket to provide service, even if they are purchased through a CNH dealer. www.agpartsltd.com

Personally I like the the old 3388/ant eater/snoopy, which is odd as I have a tendancy of hating tractors that aren't good for loader work, but I haven't been around them much. While we're on the topic, does anyone have pictures of the Case MX Ant-Eater Prototype? I hear of numerous people having seen them, but it's impossible to find pictures on the internet. Anyone know if it's on a farm, or if it was scrapped after CNH? With all I've heard about the 3388's, and the huge nose on the MX Series I (210-285), I'm surprised they didn't offer it. New Holland had SuperSteer on the Genesis, and it's on the TG now, CaseIH had the ant-eater, doesn't now. Only reason I can see besides additional production cost, is that maybe people would opt to a TG simply for price on an articulated case, like how Valtra's got the M & XM versions, but XM versions are substantially more expensive (We're interest in an XM150 with loader, but the dealer doesn't want to sell one as they're "too expensive".) -Josh

Josh what kind of a dealer do you have ? At the company i work, you ca get any trailer you want, if there is a market for it, we build it. If there isnt a market for it, you could still get it if you pay a bit more to cover the cost and risk of building a one of a kind...
