This is a computer render and short video of my first swath inverter prototype made for my final year project at university. what are your thoughts on it? Click Below for video www.youtube.com/watch?v=D52esAXpS_IGavin

It will plug up and jam the belts... And twisting a belt around gives a lot of tension on the edges of the belt, it will rip apart from the sides, while the mid part isnt stretched at all because it follows a shorter line...
BTW nice 3D work... i still work with AutoCAD 2004 but from the Inventor stuff at school, i know how time consuming it can be to model a screw shape...

thanks it did take a bit of thought to get the belt to twist, but the final solution was actually quite simple using 3ds max, the rest of the model was made using solidworks at the University.
After testing the first prototype i see no reason why the belts would plug up, the hay does tend to wrap round the axel of the rollers which i am working on fixing on the secound version.
Your the secound person to mention the increased tension at the outer edge of the belt, i guess only time will tell if the belts will fall apart. The tension on the belt is surprisenly low, i am able to pull one of the belts about .5m to the side with my hand. I have seen some belts twised in this way on large converyor belts that run all day 7 days a week for years with no signs of damage.

It depends on what belt you use... there are belts and there are belts... most belts cant take it, some trough belts (V shaped, with their sides folded up so loose grain doesnt fall off) are made to twist a bit. I just checked your YouTube movie, and i did see that the rear most roller is "eating" grass between the drum and the roller. I guess you opened a hay bale and spread it out for testing ? What will happen if you run this through long hay that hasnt been shortened by the blades of the press intake yet ?

We should have version 2 ready before our own baling season, with the weather we are currently getting it should be a good test for the machine. Im hoping the longer stalks of hay wont become anymore of a problem with freshly cut hay
