The father of a friend of mine has a Deuts 5005 which he inherited from his father, which has been in the family since new in 1973. The steering box is busted, the clutch went, it has low compression and it needs a paint job. Its a lot of work and money on an old tractor, but it has sentimental value to him, because it was his fathers tractor. Off course he wont spend thousands of euros in this tractor, but he'd like to get it into a condition to run some hay machinery. Are the parts available for this tractor, do you know a cheap adress, and do i have to take special care when rebuilding this air cooled engine with aluminium? cylinders, over cast iron blocks with wet sleeves ? I suppose the aluminium cylinders have cast-in steel sleeves ?

The problem is, that the Deutz 05 range is very popular here, so that used parts are hard to get and are not a special offer. We don´t have tractor scrapyards, but maybe You should try this link: www.schlepper-teile.de/de/index.pmodeWorking on the engine is job without any major probs. The clutch is Sachs or LuK and should be available in better carparts shops or at Deutz dealerships. What Do you mean with wet sleeves?? The engine is aircooled and You have to take new pistons and cylinders if You have to rebuild the engine. Not sure if they have oversize these days. Are You sure, it is 05??? In 1968 the 06 range was introduced.

Bernhard,
the aluminium serial number plate is hard to read, and 1973 is what i guessed. The 3 could very well be an 8, and the 7 is a missing number on the plate, so i guessed a 7 because in 1963 they werent even building the D50 with F4L 712 engine yet. It sure is a D 5005 with an F4L 812 engine and round nose. (the 06 series had a square nose, and the 912/913 series engines ?) so it must be a 1968 model.
I know air cooled engines dont have wet sleeves, but my question was, is there any precaution when honing a Deutz, compared to any other tractor engine ?
New liners and pistons are 220 euro per cylinder, but not allways necessary. I was hoping a hone (restore the cross hatch) and a set of new piston rings would get this engine back to a proper compression. With Zetors, the liners are so hard that normally a hone and a set of rings is enough. On MF 35 engines, there is usually a wear ridge on the top of the liner, which means you cant hone it with a simple device and need to rebore first.
I am just thinking, my friends granddad bought a huge tractor in 1968 !! My father, at that time also a dairy farmer, had a D15 back then !
