OK now the Portuguese manufactured tractors were only sold in certain countries,so they were rare. Does anyone own one? Has anyone ever operated one? what were they like?

I dont know if they were sold here, but our dealer had about 7 years a go a poster of the Metta/Mezzo/mega lines, with some portugese words beneath.
By the way: What was the story behinf these portugese built Valmets?? i was thinking they have been built not for long.

Market did not pan out for manufacturing down there. Last tractors built were Steyr actually.

Hey Renze,
Since Finland was not in the EEC in the late 80s,they needed a manufacturing element there. In 1989 they set up Valmet Tractor S.A. with head office in Lisbon. The factory was built in Montijo(opened 1990),and a new South European model of tractor was designed for it to produce. The factory did not meet with production estimates,so Metta tractors also became Steyr tractors in 1995. The Metta series ran from 1993 to the close of the plant in 1997.

The Steyr 650 was from the mid 60s,not the early 90s.
The Metta 4400 became the Steyr 667a the Metta 4600 became the Steyr 680a.

well, the 650 was produced till mid 80's....
And what were Steyr's motives? Austria is within the EU, i was thinking.

Steyr was in need of a basic tractor in the 60 to 80 hp range for sale in Austria. Since they already had ties to Valmet,it was a easy move.
