From what I'm hearing it is only the automotive end of Fiat that is having these troubles. They have been having a fire sale for awhile trying to raise capital,by selling off smaller companies like Magnett Marelli.

According to today´s news about 8,000 people working at Fiat Auto Spa will have to leave the Italian factories. As Woodbeef said they just talk about the automotive business. It involves 20% of the Fiat Auto Spa workers

In respect to CNH they have been raising cash through a share issue I believe. So it seems that side is OK for now. GM are under contract to buy Fiat auto if the owners wish to sell. From what I've read they are preparing the buiness to sell to GM.
