Hey folks, I have heard something about propane injection, and water injection in Diesels to increase power. ;D Does this work as good as some people claim? It seems to be regular used in tractor pulling engines. www.dieselperformanceproducts.com/home.htmlI think water injection in a Diesel works best when injected after the Diesel is injected, not sprayed into the inlet, like a gasoline engine. Otherwise the compression will reach too high pressure, even before the piston is past its upper dead point. That would make it, not a compression-ignition engine, but a compression-vaporising engine. Would give quite a kickback.. Anyone ideas?

I don't know of anybody legally using it in tractor pulling because it is illegal to use, however it does make power. The water injection doesn't really make any power however it does allow more fuel to be injected into the cylinder which will increase hp, the evaporation of the water cools the air to help prevent a melt down. If you want some real power inject alcohol into the air intake with some water or nitrous oxide that will make some power. The secret is to keep the exhaust temperture under 1200degrees f. or you will melt the pistons.

Curt,
Most of the pullers in the superstock class with the highest degree of tuning use water injection, at least here in the Netherlands.
However, here, the propane injection is illegal for tractor pulling too.
Is that alcohol injection dangerous? I think, you might get pre-ignition, and a huge backfire in the inlet manifold. Your air filter will probably be roosted then. And what about kickback? how to prevent it? Or do they make the compression ratio so low, that the alcohol will not 'ping' ??

All the diesel supers are running water injection and all of the prostocks unless they have an intercooler. there shouldn't be anything in your intake to ignite the alcohol, there was some organisations here in the Us that looked the other way on alky injection on diesels until finally it was banned, they where talking 10-20% hp increase.
