Just a silly question. Started thinking about this when I found an old topic about Lee looking into Steyr. I posted the idea of looking into the black Steyr. Then it dawned on me - I´ve always liked the looks of black tractors! (N.B. Swedtrac NOT included!!!) The first one I ever saw was a Case Agri King of some or other model from -72. Don´t know why they brought this black version to the market though. Was it some sort of anniversary? However I thought it looked really nice. I found a picture at farmphoto the other day of a Schlüter, in black! Beautiful! The new Steyr, some sort of Special Edition, I also find very good looking! So, am I of a rare breed liking the looks of black tractors or are there more of us out there? Then, if we are many, why aren´t there more black tractors out there? Are the designers missing out on something here?

Black color attracts heat = more effort required to cool engine and cab
Dirt, dust and rust are more visible on black (The reason a former boss of mine always chose gold (or dirt-road-brown) colored cars)
Hard to find a black tractor when starting work early before the sunrise...
Must be some good reason, not even the Finns are offering it!

Here you can find some info on those black Cases: www.toytractorshow.com/case_golden_demo.htmwww.toytractorshow.com/blackknight.htmHmmm... looking at those pics I guess color fading might also be a problem with black sheetmatel. I guess they were dealer demo-tractors! I'm pretty sure I have seen some old InternationalHarvester (pre. CaseIH) tractors in this kind of black-gold livery as well, was this practised by many manufacturers (black/gold demos) independent of each other? Hey HPP, how would you like to show of a Black/Gold Fendt Vario?

Yes! The Black Knight it was allright! Thanks Laapa, really good nostalgia-trip there again. I can remember back in -71 once in Mankato Minnesota..........hmmmm.
Black Vario huh? Yes, why not? But please leave out the gold for me. To me gold, and silver as well, signals that the manufacturer isn´t quite ready with the new model and therefore desperately tries to maintain the salesfigures of the older outgoing model. This applies however only to tractors, not cars. Might also be that I´m the same fool as the guys buying the gold- and silver models. I mean me loving the black on tractors, cause they´re probably painted black for the same reason. Still I think it looks nice on most tractors. Black Vario, huh? Yeah, wy not? With the NA-style silver wheels (there it´s allright with silver!). Yes, I´d go for that!

Ah yes, HPP, the Black Knights. Rumor has it they had more power than the Desert Sunset production models. Might have been true since they were demos.
Laapa, I don't know the story behind the Gold IH. Case dealer had one on his yard recently. I beleive it may have been a 826 with the hydro, possibly painted this way for demo purposes.
What about white? IH had a demonstrater Farmall C, white with red rims.

Hhmmm...interesting question there guys. I'd tend to agree with Laapa though on the practacality though of the color.
Valtra does have some black on some of their tractors. Not sure why they do not offer a complete black tractor though. I'll see what their ideas are on it.

As far as White IH's, I know the 5 millionth tractor to be buildt at the RockIsland plant (a 1066) was painted white.
Got this info from the book International Tractors 1955-1985 bu Ken Updike. I know he has posted here in the past, perhaps he knows more.
How about the really old Cases with steam engines, (or the steam-engine principal design being used with internal combustionengine-tractors). Those were big black tractors. Perhaps the Black color reminds too much of steamengines, and the manufacturers think of it as oldfashioned? (Well, the designers who were around at the time of steamengines are long since retired i suppose)
Hey HPP, Interesting you've been to Mankato. I spent 8 months working in Blue Earth, MN, about an hour south of there.

Yes Renze, I even think that The black Ferguson was a beautiful tractor. This reminds me of one of the most interesting books on tractor history I ever read. Can´t remember the name though. Anyhow it was the Massey-Harris-Ferguson Story and among others there were a picture of this black Ferguson.
Yes Laapa, I´ve been to Blue Earth. Couple of times, had friends living there. Spent first 10 months in -71 and then another month in -72 working at a farm just outside Hanska MN. Hanska was called "The Norwegian Ghetto" ´cause it was all Norwegians except for one of the two mailmen, he was swedish. The closest town of some size was New Ulm that I guess you could regard as a german ghetto. Even had Oktoberfest! Really interesting, though a little disappointing as far as machinery goes. I was quite thrilled to go to the great country and get a lot of opportunities to handle "Hi-tech" machines. But most of the farmers had machines a lot older than the ones we had at home! I even drove a Farmall F-17, spraying corn. I believe the F-series were built up to 1937 or something.

Steyr build a green 964 a couple years ago for it's 50e anniversary. They also have build ugly purple tractors, alike the Deutz Funntrac. No succes, as they would have known !? Are all Fendt tractors direct available in Orange?? Mostly along the road (constructiontractors) are orange. Remember the Ford 7810 III in silver. Can't remember the reason, anybody know?

Yes, all Fendt models you can have in the yellow-orange colour. The international colour-code is RAL 2011. But, in the internal list of different varieties for Fendt tractors you find : For the roof: - white, green or colour on customers request. For the body : - green with red rims, green with silver rims, petrol (a strange looking blu-green sort of metallic colour) with white rims, the above mentioned RAL 2011 with red rims OR other colours on customers request. Hmmmm.... Hey, you could even get a black 926!! Anybody want one?

The silver Ford 7810's were produced in 1989 to commemorate 25 years of Tractor production at Basildon, England. This factory was set up to produce the new world wide tractors (2000, 3000, 4000 and 5000). At the time the local dealer had difficulty selling them, farmers wanted Blue Fords but the dealers were forced to take a certain number I think. I suppose thats why they seem to be in demand today.
