I was having fun looking back at the old MT and came across an excellent question Laapa posted back on 1/19/2001. If you don't mind Laap I'm going to post it again. Here's his question
Just wondering: If you had a choice of tractor configurations. All with the same 200 hp enginge, same cab, good weight balance, same turning radius, same transmission choice etc. What would you prefer, and why:
A 2 wheel drive tractor A 2 WD with front wheel assist A Steiger-type articulated tractor with cab over the articulation point and equal size wheels. A 2+2 type articulated tractor with cab over rear axle and equal size wheels A TractionKing-type ridgid frame, four wheel steered tractor with crab steer ability, center mounted cab and equal size wheels. A track type tractor
Small artculated fwds, 2+2 and crab steer have disapearde from the market and we now have huge 2wds like the 8410 and MX270. Is this good? what do you think?

Yeah I thought that was kind of interesting. I don't think I got too many replies on that one though.

A question like this was posted a few weeks ago on machinery talk@agriculture.com. It went along the lines of which is better, a Steiger or a 2wd tractor.
Things that were mentioned were manuverability, backing up ease, best use of power, etc.
I think that if I had a choice, I would buy a Steiger type tractor, because I think that it is the best use of power. But there's so many other things to consider too. In Europe, a Steiger type tractor is more/less useless, because of all the front mounted work that is done over there.

I like a 2+2, because they have very good traction, and does not look like a wheel loader. I hope Zetor will build one of these one day.. Not a real 2+2 but nice anyway..
