O.K. now guys I'm looking for another car in the 1990-1994 range. I've narrowed it down to two contenders, either a Volvo 760 or a Volkswagen Passat. Preferably I'd like a station wagon,so it can double as a hauler for my Farmers' Market activities (I guess that makes this question farm machinery related,eh) I need an Automatic (We'll not even go into my wife's clutching abilities, and no she also does not drive any of the tractors either),so there goes getting a Synchro arrrgggg..... Most of the ones I'm finding are in the 150,000 klicks or more range, but seem to be well maintained with most also having service histories from respective dealers. Which one would give me longer and better service? In the Volvo,I've been told to stay away from the V-6,and go with the Intercooled Turbo 4. The Passat would be better for the winter ,because of its front wheel drive. I hear they are prone to being costly when repaired, and that happens frequently, especially with the automatic. So guys what do you think?

Over here in england both the cars you mentioned are looked upon as being pretty good stuff. Although in the 90-94 age I would go with Volvo as the Passats only became really good in about 97-98 with the new shape.
both are solid realiable cars over here but both are expensive to repair. you pay for quality thats the way i look at it with cars. you need a safe car on the uk roads as they are bad news
i have had 4 volkswagwen golf's so far and all were excellent. now got a pugeot 306 and its crap.
if your going for a 94 i'd buy volvo but make sure its a 'T5' cause they go like s**t off a shovel.

I got a 1994 Volvo 940 GL myself. I'd say stay away from the V6-Volvo (important), they are trouble, then go with the 940 instead of 700-series. (Or the 960, the straight 6-cylinder is pretty OK.) Close to the same car with a few more years of delvelopment and design. Most important NO RUST on 900 series vs. 700 series.
Why Volvo rather than VW? Well, Volvo=>VolvoBM=>VolvoBMValmet=>Valmet=>Valtra=>tractorpulling=>ms. Herlevi!!!

We have a Passat 1992 1.9 D with 340.000 km and a Passat 1994 1.9 TDI with 180.000 km . Both are very good, the TDI is very nice to drive with. We have had a Volvo 245 GL D6 AUTOMATIC, this was good but need a lot fuel. Much better to pull trailers (if necessary). We sold the Volvo to Russia when it had 320.000 km.

Hey guys,
Passats were never sold here as 1994 models. Did they look like the 93s or 95s?
I think the older pre 95 ones were roomier inside myself. I have not checked the newer Audi based Passats for room though.

The '94 model is the same as the '95 model here in Belgium. We call it the 4th generation (Dec. 1993 - 1997). It's one of the first TDI models of VW. 1 Generation : 1973 - 1980 2 Generation : 1980 - 1986 (We have had 2 of those one's) 3 Generation : 1986 - 1993 4 Generation : 1993 - 1997 5 Generation : 1997 -

The first Passats sold over here were the 1990 model year. Prior to that they were a slighty smaller car called the Quantum.
