I think that you are correct in calling it a rumor. I could see Cat being interested, but not really Agco. I do not think Agco wants to take on all that CIH and Case construction would entale. the DOJ would have a field day also.
What would happen to NH shared platforms???

The only way that I could see Agco getting CIH or part of it would be if they maybe would take over some production facilities (maybe in North America) or have some sort of joint venture and produce some equipment for New Holland like they produce Challengers and other equipment for Cat dealers. I can't see them getting another tractor factory in Britain when there is some concern about the future of the Banner Lane facility due to the costs. Something to do with the Euro currency or lack of it's use there. Alot of CIH dealers in the US now sell New Holland where they didn't before so New Holland does have an expanded the dealership organization just like when FNH got bigger representation in White, Allis Chalmers (Deutz Allis), or Massey dealers when those companies were having financial troubles. So it would be possible for New Holland to stand alone again. I never believed Fiat would buy CIH when I heard the rumor a while before it actually happened so who knows what could happen. It's all tied to debt and I don't know if something short of selling the whole farm equipment venture would help that much. I can't see how Agco would do that and don't think Cat has the desire to given the present farm economy. I would think that Fiat would ride it out. Just my opinions.

There's somethiong I don't quite understand about this rumour - what is Case IH now, other than a brand name? As the Case IH and New Holland tractors - as well as the other equipment - are becoming shared platform units built in one factory, what could a buyer buy apart from a name?

CIH is a brand name, but it is marketable, look at McCormick!
