An Illustrated History of Farm Implements by Jim Wilkie
2002, Ian Allan Publishing, 128 pages, b&w pictures
I had been waiting for a book like this for a while when i first saw it in a ad. A book that deals with the history abd development of implemnets, rater than just tractors sounded interesting indeed. Unfortunately the book was not all that I expected, but I propably have myself to blame for that. First of all the book looked !"bigger" in the ad. It is of rather small format and not very many pages. Secondly it is my opinion this book should have been titled "An illustrated history of farm implements IN BRITAIN!" since pretty much all the implements shown and discussed are made in the UK. If that's what you want this book is propably very interesting, however many of the brands are largely unkown to me (not used in Sweden). Even though the development of some implement are part of common history (the evolution of the mouldboard plought etc.) the autor is writing mainly from a UK perspective.
However, I did find the book entertaining and informative to read. I learned a few new things, and got a different perspective on a few others. The pictures are quite nice, altough colour would have been even nicer.
I would have liked to see more new stuff and perhaps a more international outlook, but that's just me.
It looks like the ultimate book on farm implement history is yet to be written...
