I read, in Classic Tractor a while back it was coming. Can't remember any details (don't have the magazine here). Would be interesting if anyone has any news since the subject was brought up last time.
I'm kind of thinking the new MF four wheel drive (we are talking articulated, pivot steer, big-wheels-all-round, lot's of hp, right?) falls into the same category as 600hp Caterpillars w. large drivewheel (RC78000T style), tracked Fendts, pull-type JD STS combine, the return of 2+2 and other phantom-machines promised by discussion boards like this for years...
Not saying some of those things wont happen (soon) though...

There have been rumours about Caterpillar developing a 500 hp 4WD articulated tractor and Massey Ferguson returning to the 4WD articulated tractor market since a year more or less.
Now, Could they be the same Series? Could they be wheeled versions of the CAT MT 800 range?
Who knows...

Yeah Martijn, you are right! Caterpillar did developed several 4WD prototypes in the latest 70´s (you can see one of the latest model built in 1981/82, the X-2 model, in this website prototype section). The market was not very good for these kind of tractors and Cat prototypes needed more research & engineering work so Caterpillar designed the Challenger. A matter of Marketing: a completely new produt launching is a good way of entering a market (ag). I always wondered what explanations would support a wheeled Cat tractor as they have been telling us how bad wheeled models are compared to rubber-crawled since 15 years ago. Looking forward to see advertisements and brochures for Cat (AGCO) with tyres...

Then again, JD-advertising was coming down pretty hard on crawlers and rotary combines at one time...
