O.K. guys this is a question I've often wondered about. How popular are the large artic tractors on your side of the pond? With the narrow roads it would seem they would be kinda restricted as to where they could be used. Because of this I can see where the IH 2+2,and Valtra X series would work ,but they are under 200 pto hp.
Why did the Versatile/Ford bi-directional not go over very well?

Well, I'm from Spain. There're very few articulated tractors in my zone. My father drove a Deutz 16006 many years ago and the last JD i saw working in my town was four or five years ago. Both tractors, the Deutz and the JD were used with scrapers, never to agricultural purposes. My father also harvested wheat in a farm near my town and there was four or five Versatiles in the 70's, i don't know what they have now. Interesting question that you posted Woodbeef! Why NH VersatileĀ“s Bidirectional tractor did not sell very well in Europe? Although it has many interesting features to compete against European systems tractors like Tracs, Fendt Xylon, Claas Xeryon or even JCB Fastracs not too many were sold here. Is it just due to the lack of a platform over axles? Apart from a great loader, it seems to be a very good tractor for mounting mowers. Any clues?

The Bi-Directional seems to be an excellent machine for loader work and light farm duties. I'm not sure how the transmission would stand up to tillage and road haulage though.
I know CNH kept this model (TV140) when they sold Versatile, so I would expect it will turn up in Europe at some stage.

A handfull of Steigers, Whites and Steiger-built IH's were sold in Sweden in the late 70's and early 80s and some 2+2 models. Then grainprices went down and the large cropfarms had difficult times. Many large tractors were retired. At this time attention also went to the potential soilcompaction-problem with heavy articulated tractors. Virtually no articulated ag-tractors were sold in the early 80's and 90's. This year one (1!) JD9400 was sold (to replace a 70's Steiger). Quite a few 70's Steigers however have returned to active life fitted with new engines and flotaion tyres. The are a lot of iron for the money and really does not weigh more than a JD8000 or Magnum. The 2+2 machines got a bad reputation for mechanical failures in the pivot-area, transmission and axles and the market died. Our family-farm bought one REALLY cheap a few years ago. Works just fine for us. The TV140 is an interesting concept but I'm doubtfull it will hold up for tillage-duties, also it is very, very expensive. I'd rather buy a "real" tractor (possibly reversible like Fendt or Valtra) or a wheelloader. For the money you can alomst buy both!
